Addendum to District AI Policy: Restriction of AI Companion Platforms
In light of new research from Stanford University and Common Sense Media identifying significant psychological, developmental, and safety risks associated with AI companion platforms, the district is implementing the following addition to its Responsible Use of Technology and Artificial Intelligence Policy.
Effective immediately, students and staff are restricted from accessing, promoting, or using AI-based companion platforms such as but not limited to: Candy.ai, Character.AI, Replika, Nomi, EVA AI, and similar services on all district devices, networks, and during any school-sponsored activity.
Rationale:
These platforms differ from general-purpose AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude in that they are explicitly designed to simulate emotional and romantic relationships with users. They have been shown to:
Blur the line between reality and simulation, especially for adolescent users.
Discourage engagement with real-life friends, family, and support systems.
Present serious risks to mental health by failing to detect or appropriately respond to signs of crisis.
Provide guidance that may undermine responsible decision-making, including encouragement of risky or harmful behaviors.
Expose users to inappropriate or sexually explicit content, even with teen safeguards.
Facilitate and promote cyberbullying and other socially damaging behaviors.
These risks constitute a threat to student safety, emotional development, and well-being.
Enforcement:
District network filters will be updated to block known AI companion sites.
Any attempt to bypass these filters or engage with such platforms via personal devices on school grounds will be considered a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy.
Counseling and/or disciplinary actions may follow violations, depending on severity and intent.
Parent and Staff Awareness:
The district encourages parents and guardians to be aware of these platforms and to engage in open discussions with students about the emotional and developmental risks posed by AI companion sites.
Staff are expected to report concerns about student use of such platforms to administration or counseling staff.
